After reviewing the list of proposed markers, can you think of other markers that have been left out? If yes, what are they? How would you define them?

I note the absence of any mention of style or quality, or of content.

Style or quality: I would hope that a well-educated person would not merely satisfy the markers for oral and written expression, reasoning, ethics, and creativity, but do so with a well-developed and elegant style. It is not sufficient merely to get one's ideas across; it is important to get them across in a way that the audience listens or reads willingly and with pleasure.

Content: Reasoning, ethics, public service - all of the markers require a basic knowledge of facts, trends, and processes. What these should be is debatable, I realize, but certainly they should include
· knowledge of major historical trends and events of at least the past century
· familiarity with and appreciation of important works of literature, art, and music
· understanding of the most influential systems of philosophy
· understanding basic principles of science

Some additional markers to consider are:

a. The ability to see beyond the immediate to the consequence(s) of decisions/actions.

b. The ability to function constructively and responsibly within a selected field of expertise (major).

c. The ability to ascertain the benefits of and the strengths and weaknesses of alternative "ways of knowing".

I would like for marker 6 (Understanding the Variety of Human Experience) to be expanded to say that we expect our students to increase their understanding of diversity within the American experience as well as their ability to function in a multilingual, multicultural world. I would like to be very clear that we expect every student to leave this institution with increased international perspective

I especially like Bob Tinnin's "B." Given the general educational concerns conveyed by the markers as they stand, some reference to the more specialized learning that takes place here is appropriate.

I like to suggest "Recognition of the need for lifelong learning and continuing education". And also, "Recognition of the need to develop independent learning skills".

I know it would be impossible to list the "information" that a graduate should possess, but the markers should not be solely process. Adding one about the major (suggestion "b") would address that, at least somewhat. And in addition to being able to use, understand, engage in, etc.--all very important--it seems that we should place more emphasis on the last point, investigation, and include research (knowing how and where to acquire valid information).

I would add one or two additional markers to take further into account the need for students to be familiar with the world. The ability to relate global to local affairs (and the reverse) is key. This is really as much an ethical as an academic matter, since it embraces the realization that it is a privilege to have the time and space to inquire about the world.

Oregon has virtually eliminated the applied and performing arts in K-12 because taxpayers do not value them, but that does not mean they are a less important part of social culture and/or personal expression. There are multiple forms of expression, aside from "written" and "oral" communications which students would be well served in life and in their chosen occupations, by having experience in these disciplines.
