Us and Them: A History of Intolerance in America

Instructor: Beth Grodd
Fall 1998 to Spring 1999

Through various readings, videos, and lectures, students explore events in our history when intolerance arose from the fear, suspicion, and the anger of ordinary people--the same impulses that still cause discord today--and will be brought face-to-face with the negative and often tragic consequences of prejudice and hate. Students will also learn about the hope and heroism that true moral conviction inspires. Students engage in collaborative work throughout the course which culminates in a "Tolerance Fair" that the students host at several Portland area elementary, middle, and high schools.
