Integrated program broadens student horizons
In 1994, Portland State University adopted a new general education program, University Studies, which provides students with a cohesive program of integrated learning experiences. The University Studies Program emphasizes group collaboration, applied learning, community experience, and awareness of the urban setting.
PSU faculty have designed a four-year program of study required of all students, except those in Liberal Studies or the Honors Program. This nationally recognized program allows students to immediately use their aquired knowledge, and develop their academic and problem-solving skills. The program fosters abilities and attitudes that promote lifelong learning.
University Studies courses are organized in clusters. In Freshman Inquiry, students choose among a limited selection of general topics. An interdisciplinary approach provides exposure to a variety of perspectives. Sophomore Inquiry continues the learning format of Freshman Inquiry, with an expanded range of topics. Junior upper-division clusters build on the choices available in Sophomore Inquiry, with expanded depth and rigor. The program culminates in Senior Capstones, which take students into the community to apply their knowledge in real-world settings.
Interdisciplinary focus encourages faculty dialogue
The interdisciplinary focus of the University Studies progam encourages an interest among faculty in general principles of teaching and learning. With greater exposure to colleagues in different fields, faculty have become interested in generating dialogue. The Center for Academic Excellence was created to encourage and support study and research in teaching, learning and assessment across the campus. For the first time, a central agency exists to facilitate discussion, organize faculty retreats, workshops and consultation. CAE also develops community partnerships to support community-based learning throughout the University Studies curriculum, and particularly in the Senior Capstone courses.
