Food Industry Management Program

Training Leaders in Food Management
The Food Industry Management Program trains leaders in a growing industry

Program addresses entire industry chain

The Food Industry Management Program at Portland State University educates managers to compete effectively through familiarity with the entire chain - from grower to grocer - with an emphasis on using all technology tools at their disposal. The program aims to cultivate the key economic role of the food industry in the Pacific Northwest, concentrating on competitive advantages, and a base of high-quality managers within the food companies.

The Food Industry Management Program was created in partnership with the food industry in 1994, in response to industry concerns. Funding comes from the industry, and Meyer Memorial Trust. All program activities have been developed in close relationship with industry representatives. An Industry Advisory Board meets frequently to ensure the program meets industry needs.

The program offers courses, programs, conferences, forums, seminars and internships available to current industry managers and talented students interested in developing careers in food industry management. The program has a strong applied-research component, drawing upon PSU faculty expertise in marketing, human resources, accounting, finance, information systems and strategy.

Custom-designed programs are also available to respond to industry needs. Management and leadership education by contract is available on-site for area businesses.

Industry leader endorses PSU program

"We [Fred Meyer] believe the Food Industry Management Program is important because through total industry involvement, all parts of the supply chain - growers, packers, wholesalers, and retailers, are working together to improve processes for all.

An additional benefit the program provides is a one week session held annually that brings together a cross industry group of people to promote leadership development and industry understanding. Participation in this program is an excellent way for us to demonstrate the value we place in our people and provide them with the opportunity to improve their skills and food industry knowledge. As this program continues to mature, we will look to Portland State University's Food Industry Management Program as an excellent resource for prospective Fred Meyer employees,"

Robert G. Miller, President and CEO Fred Meyer, Inc.
