Every year we perform surveys in all of our Community Based Learning courses. We ask our students and community partners about their experiences.
Feedback from Community Partners:
“Sharing resources with the University has strengthened the organization. There is a very strong relationship between the organization and PSU.”
“[One of the best aspects of this experience was] students providing positive role models to middle school students and providing small group instruction for reading students.”
“The outcome of student work was great. One group gave a tracking database. The training group gave good resources. A third group produced an effective flow chart.”
“Seeing the awareness change about the public school system and the challenges students face to succeed. Also the kids here are shown that anyone can go to college. A lot of them don’t know anyone going to college.”
“These (PSU) students have become a vital part of the kids' lives and the SMART program at Beach.”
Feedback from Students in the Courses:
“Although it takes extra time to participate in community based learning I believe that with the appropriate site, learning can be 10 times greater than just by what you hear in class. I am a hands-on kind of person.”
“I feel that creating cooperative efforts between the community and schools/PSU is an effective teaching tool in preparing students for real world issues.”
“The practicum was a wonderful positive learning experience for me. I plan on continuing working in the school I was in.”
“There are too many classes that require community volunteering. It is very difficult when a person has to work and has a family. I had to cut my work hours.”
“Very important aspect to learning, makes curriculum more real.”
“I think community based learning is great because not only are you learning, but you are benefitting the community at the same time. You get real world experience and can make contacts and meet mentors that can help you. It should be required for more courses at PSU, but I think more credits should be given for the practicum part of the course.”
