Capstone Students Help Fund Camp for AIDS Children
(excerpted from an article in The Partner's Newsletter by Vicki Reitenauer, Capstone Faculty)
Students in the Capstone class, Grantwriting for Nonprofits, met in March for the final time with Teke Dillender, development director of the Women's Intercommunity AIDS Resource (WIAR). Three student teams each submitted a solid grant proposal that WIAR promptly sent out to three different foundations. WIAR, which supports HIV-positive women and their children in Oregon and southwest Washington, is in need of grant money to fund its Camp Starlight for children.
The only camp of its kind in Oregon
The summer of 2001 will mark Camp Starlight's third year of providing children the opportunity to enjoy fun, caring, safe, and normal camping experiences. WIAR is the only organization in the state specifically addressing the needs of HIV-positive women, their children (some of whom are HIV-positive themselves), and other children who are HIV-infected and -affected.
Raised $10,500 in Grant Monies
Of the three grant proposals submitted by the teams, two have already received funding from PGE/Enron Foundation and Rose E. Tucker Foundation. The awards have netted WIAR $10,500 toward the cost of supporting Camp Starlight 2001. In the process, 12 PSU students were transformed from skeptics to successful grant writers, and 60 children affected by AIDS will have the opportunity to just be kids at camp this summer.
